Fan Comments
I have been watching this team since 1997, and not as a band-wagon jumper. The first games I went to (a few in each year in the beginning), Rider fans were generally happy if we beat Edmonton at least one time in a season. In those days they also had the “Whopper of a Win” promotion, which was always against Hamilton, that a win meant a free Whopper from B.K. to everyone in attendance if the Riders won.
If you remember what I’m talking about you’ll remember the game we actually beat Hamilton and even though we still had an extremely lousy season, the 17,000 or so in attendance that night got a free Whopper! That was the end of that promotion. I’ve been a season ticket holder since 2003 now and also went to see the 62, 000 attendance game we won in Edmonton, the tied game in Calgary and the Grey Cup in Calgary. So, what I’m getting at is: through the good and the bad I’ve supported and loved this team and always will.
The fact of the matter is though, Montreal was shown favouritism by CFL officials all year. I not only watched every Rider game all year (in person or on TSN) , but also watched every other game between every other team all year too. Penalties went un-called against Montreal in every game they played throughout the season.. I think if someone were to put together a film you could find 100 un-called penalties on Cox alone. With the amount of “Non-call” penalties Montreal had through-out the season, it’s no wonder they ended up 15-3. One of the “interceptions” that Montreal had in the Grey Cup game was clearly forward-pass interference, NOT an interception. Had that been properly called as a penalty it would’ve lead to a chip-shot field-goal or an easy touch-down.
The most important thing I NEED to make sure people know, from what I saw with my own two eyes, is that Montreal should NEVER have had time to attempt the field-goal in the first place. I don’t know what the other 6 million people watching were viewing, with 10 seconds left on the clock, but I was VERY intently focused on the clocks. I was there, in the stands. I didn’t start watching the last passing play until the Game Clock started moving. The play, on that pass, was whistled in . The Play Clock started ticking down, A GOOD 5-6 CAME OFF OF THE PLAY-CLOCK BEFORE THE GAME CLOCK MOVED! Had the Game Clock been moving at the same time as the Play Clock, which it’s supposed to, THERE WOULD NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN TIME FOR A FIELD-GOAL ATTEMPT! THE LAST PASS SHOULD’VE BEEN THE FINAL PLAY! Bottom line: Saskatchewan Roughriders are the REAL 2009 Grey Cup Champions!
Please print this, I tried to post some of these facts on CFL.ca, but they won’t post anything I say. Yeah, biased officials would be a problem, but better to acknowledge the problem now than let it grow. My solution to getting fair officiating into the league: pay them salaries comparable to the players and then fine them for “bad” and “missed” calls. If a call, or non-call, upon later review is found to be wrong, especially on a game changing call, or non-call, the official responsible for the miss gets fined. I also know that no matter what any later evidence turns up, they aren’t going to take-away and re-reward a Grey-Cup. The next time Montreal comes into Saskatchewan, let’s let the Ref’s know, louder than ever, what we think. Not on flags thrown, unless it’s BULL&%$#, which is exactly what we should chant at them if it is, but on the constant HOLDING, CONTACTING and FORWARD-PASS INTERFERENCE that was over-looked by officials throughout the 2009 season.
To the team, yeah you made mistakes in the end, but it’s alright. The game was heavily slanted towards the Al’s by the officials anyways. Ex: Durant got called for “intentional grounding:. It was probably legitimate, but when was it called all season. I bet it happened at least 10 times and might’ve been called 3. I remember one game where Calvillo, about to be sacked, threw the ball at the ground right at his feet. No penalty was thrown then. Anyway, it’s irrelevant who the extra man was. If it’s Lucas as some reports say, don’t feel too bad Sean. You’re and outstanding player, you lead the team in tackles in’08 with 98 and were over-looked by fans and media alike. To everyone; from All of the coaches to All of the players: I hope to see as many of you as we can hold on to next season. This team is going to be the next dynasty in the CFL and we won’t need the assistance of the League or officials to do it. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and look forward to a bright future.
P.S. I would like to see the team officially challenge the officiating. We shouldn’t take this laying down and things won’t change unless they’re brought into the light.
Proud fan of the REAL 2009 Grey Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders,
Sean Heney
